We’ve changed our name!
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for visiting our new site. I’m pleased to announce that the New York Art Ensemble has a new name, Tribeca New Music, Inc.
It all started in Tribeca
Ten years ago our Festival started as a little known new series at the Flea Theater (in Tribeca) and grew to become one of the most successful new music series in NYC.
“Started in 2001 by Preston Stahly, a composer and the executive and artistic director of the New York Art Ensemble, the TRIBECA NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL has become one of the city’s most inviting contemporary-classical events. Last year this scrappy series outgrew its longtime home at the Flea Theater in TriBeCa, establishing an uptown beachhead at Merkin Concert Hall.”
—Steve Smith, New York Times
We felt the Flea Theater and the inclusive, pop culture, edgy spirit of TriBeCa was the perfect place for us to prioritize a new programming direction—avant-pop. We started the Tribeca New Music Festival and eventually through association that's how most peole came to know us. So, we decided not to fight success.
Tribeca Monsters!
Along the way, our own in-house band emerged led by myself, violinist Mary Rowell, and pianist Geoffrey Burleson. We have been joined by a host of amazing composers and performing artists. The Monsters will continue to perform on our Tribeca New Music Festival and abroad as we spread our wings.
Young Composer Competition
This event remains one of the nation’s most important competitions for composers 21 years old and younger. The Tribeca New Music Festival has presented all winning pieces of the competition for the past decade and will continue this important tradition. Our two-fold purpose to encourage outstanding young composers in America and to provide a prominent forum for their recognition remains strong. The Festival looks forward to hosting the next YCC winner on the 2012 Tribeca New Music Festival in NYC.
Only the name has changed to protect the innocent
We will continue our programming approach, presenting and performing some of the most compelling new avant pop works on the planet. We’ll continue to expand our reach to new venues and audiences and “export” the spirit of Tribeca across the land. There’s some really important art music to be heard, and we will do our best to bring it!

Artistic and Executive Director
