Find out what some of the best emerging composers in America are creating for the audience in this concert featuring the Division 1 and 2 first prize scores of our national 2022 Young Composer Competition. Division 1 represents composers from ages 22 to 35, and Division 2 includes composers up to 21 years old. The remarkable quality of their music is truly inspiring and is a testament to the high quality emerging from today’s promising young artists.
Division 1: Composer Josh Henderson won first place for his composition VENI – A Dystopian Space Cowgirl Rhapsody for Solo Violin and Fixed Electronics, which he will perform live on the program.
Josh Henderson (b. 1988) is enjoying a multifaceted career as a cross-genre violinist, violist, and composer. As a classical soloist, he has performed with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, China Performing Arts Broadcasting Troupe, Starling Chamber Orchestra, and many others. Carving out a reputation in jazz, rock, hip-hop, and country fiddle for his dynamic performances, he has served as music director for the Emmy award winning Damien Escobar (of Nuttin' But Stringz), and in this role has performed at a number of events across the globe including a performance at the 2013 Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball hosted by Russell Simmons honoring Barack Obama.
Division 2: Composer Jaylin Vinson won first place for his composition Shimmer! for cello quartet.
Jaylin Vinson (b. 2002) is a composer and violinist based in Oklahoma City. He is currently studying music at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Jaylin uses his music to respond to his physical and intellectual interactions with the universe. Topics include admiration of the natural world, critiques of human society, and embracing his ethnic origins. About composing the music he says, “Working with only cellists made the writing process easier. Composing different parts for the same instrument allowed me to really consider each player, their abilities, their performance styles and individual personalities before coming up with the final piece.”
TNM has assembled an all-star team of young cellists to perform led by Georgia Bourderionnet, with Laura Andrade, Dara Hankins, and Daniel Hass.
Additional works on the program include Episode Cinquieme by Betsy Jolas, Ever-Widening Circles by Jeremy Harman, Only One Flower in a Field by Daniel Hass, Waiting for Proof by Noam Faingold, and Lama by Giovanni Sollima.
