About the Music
That Special Place, by Jonah Cohen. “This piece recalls some of my earliest musical memories from car rides with my dad, where we’d listen to his favorite bands like Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, and Guns N' Roses. Those moments, sharing the music he loved, have always stuck with me, and 70s and 80s rock holds a special place in my heart. It's shaped how I think about music, especially rhythm and groove. This piece is a tribute to that music and to my dad for introducing me to it.”
Iridescence, by Zach Gulaboff Davis, traces a musical narrative of opaque, brooding lyricism to cosmic heights. Along the way, listen for point of climax and transformation when the opening harmonies evolve as the work unfolds.
something more than itself, by Ledah Finck, is her newest piece for Bergamot, finished in summer 2024. It explores text by the Danish poet Inger Christensen and continues Ledah’s current practice, exemplified by the quartet's recent release of Quilting Song, of bringing songwriting directly into her string quartet universe.
Bildungsroman (selection) Eli Greenhoe, a masterful Brooklyn-native composer and longtime collaborator with Bergamot violinist Ledah Finck via their chamber-folk duo Freddy & Sally, is completing an evening-length piece for Bergamot this season, a movement of which will be showcased on this concert.
Punctum, by Caroline Shaw is one of the first pieces that brought the Bergamot Quartet together, and remains a favorite. Shaw describes the piece as "an exercise in nostalgia,” using Bach's St. Matthew Passion as the seed of that nostalgia and refracting it through her own colorful lens.
Founded in 2016 at the Peabody Institute, the Bergamot Quartet—featuring Ledah Finck and Sarah Thomas (violins), Amy Tan (viola), and Irène Han (cello)—is committed to pushing the boundaries of the string quartet tradition. Based in New York City, they specialize in music by living composers, with a particular focus on works by women, blending innovation with classical roots to create thought-provoking and engaging performances.
