Tribeca New Music is pleased to present Seven)Suns - Love Letters from the Zombie Apocalypse. The question arises, Heavy Metal and Bach? What’s up with that? Below is a fascinating response from the group’s leader, Earl Maneein.
Heavy Metal - ”We're calling this show ‘Love Letters from the Zombie Apocalypse’, which is obviously somewhat tongue in cheek but also represents what we consider to be a snapshot of living in the present time of upheaval and uncertainty. I read somewhere that zombie apocalypse fantasies are super popular these days because they serve as metaphors for emotionally coping with the idea of impending doom and as reflections of our own survival instincts. I think that our musical choices, particularly for this program, resonate with these ideas, and are reflective of those inner emotional states that we humans have to process. I am excited about this performance (and hopefully other people should be too) because the music we picked is a reflection of these tumultuous times where we seem to have found ourselves. “
JS Bach - “We intend to use the work of Bach in this performance as a direct and extreme contrast to the metal-inspired music. We chose Bach intentionally because his music is generally suffused with a spiritual aspect, which is sometimes obvious, and sometimes hidden, but always there. We performed a similar program in Fairbanks, Alaska in an old chapel bathed in complete darkness and we were pleasantly surprised by how well it all fit together. Many people left the concert in tears from the emotional catharsis of the sudden contrast.” —Earl Maneein
