Sun, Moon, Sky — World-renowned photographer Stan Honda and award-winning composer Preston Stahly team up to offer an evening of night sky photography and music in this gallery opening at Nancy Manocherian’s - The Cell theater.
At 7PM, violinist Jennifer Choi will perform Preston Stahly’s Sapphire for violin and soundtrack, inspired by an astronomical twilight as viewed from the sea. The exhibition features Stan Honda’s night sky photos of Arches National Park, the Grand Canyon North Rim, Chaco Culture National Park, the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017, the launch and landing of Space Shuttle Discovery, Rocky Mountain National Park, NYC astrophotography, and much more. The exhibit Sun, Moon, Sky runs from January 17 - February 7, 2020.
Stan Honda is a New York-based photographer and worked as a photojournalist for 34 years, most recently for Agence France-Presse (AFP), the French news agency. He covered a wide range of topics including news events, politics, economics, sports and human interest stories. Photographing the space shuttle program for five years was a highlight of his time at AFP, as he has been following the space program since childhood.
A continuing project involves night sky landscapes, combining his long-time interest in astronomy and photography. Stan’s astronomy-related photos have been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, NationalGeographic.com, Sky & Telescope and Yahoo News. He conducts night sky photography workshops in New York City, Rocky Mountain National Park, Flagstaff, Arizona, and at the Summit Nature Photography Workshop in Wyoming. He has been interviewed by CBS This Morning, National Geographic and ABC News about photographing celestial events. His photos have been featured eight times as NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day. Stan has been part of eight solo or group exhibitions.
Preston Stahly is an award winning composer and producer based in New York City. He has written chamber, vocal, and symphonic works, and has also composed for film (Robert Altman’s Secret Honor) and television (the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Children’s Television Workshop). His concert works focus on acoustic and electro-acoustic techniques with a wide variety of instrumentation ranging from solo and chamber works to film and video. As a dark sky enthusiast with a passion to explore our connection to the universe, he has combined music and astrophotography to bring audiences closer to the cosmos through art.
He is a co-founder of the Tribeca New Music Festival from its inception in 2001, and spearheaded the Avant Pop movement in NYC, focusing on a new classical music infused with American pop culture. He is currently the artistic and executive director of Tribeca New Music, Inc., and is an Artist in Residence at Nancy Manocherian's - The Cell theater in NYC.
Violinist Jennifer Choi has charted a career that breaks through the conventional boundaries of solo violin, chamber music, and the art of improvisation. Hailed by The New York Times as an “excellent violinist," "soulful, compelling,” and by Time Out New York as “passionate,” and “adventurous”, Jennifer has performed worldwide in venues such as the Library of Congress in Washington D.
